bwSync&Share is an online storage service, based on Nextcloud, that enables employees and students of universities in Baden-Württemberg to synchronise or exchange data between different computers, mobile devices and users (similarly to dropbox). Each user has a storage quota of 50GB, which can be extended if necessary.

Features

Data can be accessed using the Nextcloud Client, which is available for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Apple iOS and Android, as well as cross-platform using a web browser. In addition, a user can make his stored data accessible to other users by assigning the relevant access rights. You can download the client from the bwsyncandshare website or, on university computers that are managed with baramundi, you can install it directly from the baramundi kiosk.

The integration of OnlyOffice, an online editor similar to Google Docs, allows users to edit documents in the web interface without the need to install an Office suite on the device. In addition to synchronising and sharing files, it is also possible for multiple people to edit the files at the same time.

You can invite members of the participating universities (Shibboleth users), as well as all other e-mail addresses (external users).

Communication between users' devices and the infrastructure of Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) is encrypted. The data is stored unencrypted on the online storage systems of the KIT. Data access is limited to:

  • the user who initially saved the data
  • other users who have been authorised to have access by the data owner.
