Data backup has been set up for all central services operated by the Computer and Media Centre.

The departments and institutions are responsible for the data backup of their decentralised services which are not under the responsibility of the Computer Centre!

The data backup does not constitute long-term archiving, i.e. the backed-up data is only kept for a limited period of time, currently for a maximum of 30 days.

The Computer Centre has established a two-stage data backup procedure:

  1. Daily backup of data to a second building on the Reutlingen campus (at night)
  2. Daily transfer of the backed up data to the University of Ulm (at night)

The retention period for the data backup is 30 days. This data backup can be used to fully restore IT services or to recover accidentally deleted data.  Data that was deleted more than 30 days ago cannot be restored!

The backed up data at the University of Ulm is only used for disaster prevention. i.e. this data is only used if a recovery with the data backup from Reutlingen is no longer possible. A recovery of accidentally deleted data is not possible from the backup from Ulm with reasonable effort.

FAQs

Support

Please report any problems to the Service Desk.

The processing times correspond to the Service Level Agreement (SLA).

Data Backup / Hosting

The service is operated in computer rooms of the Computer Centre on campus.

Request Service

Access to this service does not have to be requested.

User Responsibilities

Data on local hard drives of PCs and notebooks is not backed up. We do not recommend to store data on PCs locally, but to use storage services such as a group drive, BSCW or the cloud storage (bwSync&Share).

If temporary storage of data on local hard disks is unavoidable, e.g. when working with notebooks while travelling, then the users themselves must take care of data backup.

Legal

Data backup is not suitable for audit-proof storage of data.
